Rila Monastery – Bulgaria’s Most Iconic Landmark

If there’s one place I recommend every visitor to Bulgaria sees at least once, it’s Rila Monastery.

Located within the beautiful Rila Mountains, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is far more than just a monastery. It’s one of Bulgaria’s greatest cultural treasures and somewhere that leaves a lasting impression whether you’re interested in history, architecture, photography or simply beautiful places.

Just under two hours from Sofia, it’s one of the country’s most popular day trips.

A Place Steeped in History

Founded in the 10th century by St. Ivan (John) of Rila, Bulgaria’s most revered saint, Rila Monastery has played a vital role in preserving the country’s culture, language and Orthodox traditions for more than a thousand years.

Despite fires, invasions and centuries of change, the monastery remains an active place of worship and was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. Today, it’s one of Bulgaria’s most visited landmarks and an important symbol of the nation’s identity.

More Than Just a Monastery

Although the history is fascinating, what makes Rila Monastery so special is the feeling you get when you walk through its gates.

Stepping into the central courtyard, you’re immediately surrounded by striking black-and-white striped arches, colourful frescoes and the magnificent Church of the Nativity. All around you, the towering pine forests and mountains create a peaceful backdrop that makes this one of the most beautiful places in Bulgaria.

Even on busy days, there’s a calm atmosphere that’s difficult to describe until you’ve experienced it yourself. We recommend you take your time exploring the monastery. The beautifully painted church is breathtaking both inside and out, while the monastery museum offers fascinating insight into its history and treasures.

Don’t forget to look up as you wander around the courtyard, the intricate frescoes covering the walls and archways are some of the finest examples of Bulgarian Revival art.

If you have time there are several walking trails nearby so you can make it a great full day trip.

A Perfect Day Trip from Sofia

One of the reasons we often recommend Rila Monastery is how easy it is to visit from Sofia.

Whether you’re driving yourself or joining an organised excursion, it’s a straightforward day trip that combines spectacular mountain scenery with one of Bulgaria’s most important cultural landmarks.

If you can, arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon to enjoy a quieter atmosphere and avoid the busiest tour groups.

Don’t Leave Without Trying the Mekitsi

No visit to Rila Monastery feels quite complete without stopping at the famous bakery just outside the monastery walls.

Freshly made mekitsi, traditional Bulgarian fried dough, are served warm, often dusted with icing sugar, and pair perfectly with the local sheep’s yoghurt. There’s usually a queue, particularly during the summer months, but it’s become something of a tradition for visitors, and for good reason.

Simple, delicious and unmistakably Bulgarian, they’re one of those little things that many people remember just as fondly as the monastery itself!

📍 Location: Rila Mountains, approximately two hours from Sofia.

Recommended visit: Half a day (or a full day if combining with nearby attractions).

Why we love it: It perfectly combines Bulgaria’s history, culture and spectacular mountain scenery.

ESLB Top Tip: Arrive early if you can. The monastery is at its most peaceful before the larger tour groups arrive, making it much easier to appreciate the atmosphere and capture beautiful photographs.
