Volt Premium Taxi – A Little Luxury When Getting Around Sofia
I’ve used Volt Premium Taxi a few times now and have been really impressed with the service, so this is one I wanted to add to our Sofia recommendations.
There are plenty of perfectly good taxis in Sofia, I use Yellow regularly too, but Volt offers something a little different. It’s a premium taxi service and, although you’ll pay a little more for the journey, there are definitely occasions when I think it’s worth it.
The cars I’ve travelled in have been immaculate and the drivers have always been smartly dressed in uniform, polite and professional. They also speak English, which makes Volt particularly useful for visitors to Sofia. This is actually part of the service Volt promotes, along with its uniformed drivers and premium fleet.
Easy to book – even at 4am
One of the things I particularly like is being able to arrange everything through the Volt app. You can order a car when you need one or schedule a journey in advance, and payment can be handled through the app too.
I recently needed to leave home at 4am for a flight from Sofia Airport, and this was exactly the sort of occasion when I appreciated the extra reassurance of having a car pre-booked. The driver arrived as arranged and I didn’t have to worry about finding a taxi in the middle of the night or sorting out payment at the end of the journey.
Volt specifically offers airport transfers as well as scheduled rides, and its current service operates 24/7.
It’s also nice not having to think about whether you have enough cash with you or whether a card terminal is working. When you’re half asleep and heading to the airport at four in the morning, the fewer things you have to think about, the better!
When would I choose Volt?
I probably wouldn’t feel the need to use a premium taxi for every journey around Sofia. Yellow Taxi also has a very good app-based service and is something I use regularly.
But there are times when I really enjoy the extra level of service Volt offers. An early airport journey is an obvious one, but I’d also choose it when getting dressed up for an event or wedding and wanting to arrive somewhere in a little more style. It feels closer to having a private driver than simply jumping into a taxi.
There are some nice little touches too. Volt’s current cars include premium BMW and Mercedes models, and depending on the vehicle there are extras such as bottled water and phone charging. You can even specify preferences such as temperature, music or a quiet journey when booking.
A quick word about taxis in Sofia
One piece of advice I always give visitors is that I prefer to book taxis rather than simply flagging one down in the street.
There are plenty of legitimate taxis in Sofia, and I don’t want to give the impression that taking a taxi here is something to worry about. I simply find booking through an established company’s app more reassuring. You know which company and car you’re getting, there’s a record of the journey, and you reduce the risk of accidentally getting into an unofficial car or one charging unexpected rates.
For visitors who don’t speak Bulgarian, I’d particularly recommend downloading a taxi app before arriving in Sofia rather than waiting until you need one.
Would I use Volt again?
Absolutely, I already have.
For everyday journeys I’ll continue to use regular taxi services too, but when reliability is particularly important or I simply want a more premium experience, Volt has become my first choice.
It’s a little more expensive, but for the occasions when I’ve used it, I’ve felt the additional service was well worth paying for.
