Omaya Eco Village – A Fairytale Escape Hidden in the Forest
Every now and then you discover somewhere so unique that you almost hesitate to tell other people about it. Omaya Eco Village is one of those places.
Hidden away in the forest near Gotse Delchev, Omaya is unlike anywhere else we’ve stayed in Bulgaria. It’s peaceful, beautifully designed and secluded, the kind of place where you switch off your phone, slow down and enjoy nature.
After hearing about it from several friends, we finally booked a stay ourselves and quickly understood why so many people recommend it.
A Hidden Village in the Forest
One of the things that makes Omaya so special is that you don’t really know what to expect until you arrive!
Tucked away just off a quiet country road, the eco village is hidden among the trees and completely invisible until you reach the entrance. Fortunately, it’s well signposted, so finding it is easy.
The village itself consists of just seven individually designed houses, each hidden away amongst the woodland with its own private path leading through the trees.
Built from natural materials including clay and wood, the cottages blend beautifully into the surrounding landscape. Although they have the appearance of rustic woodland cabins, they offer all the comforts you’d expect from a boutique hotel, including comfortable beds, modern bathrooms, Wi-Fi and electricity.
Staying in the Wonder House
During our visit we stayed in Wonder House. With its round bed, wooden furniture, cosy fireplace and beautifully finished bathroom, it felt like stepping into the pages of a storybook. Even the heavy wooden entrance door, secured with a traditional padlock, added to the feeling that we’d left modern life behind for a couple of days.
Peace, Nature & Complete Privacy
Although the woodland isn’t vast, it feels very peaceful.
Two picturesque lakes, quiet forest paths and plenty of open space mean it’s entirely possible to spend hours exploring without seeing another guest.
The restaurant continues the relaxed atmosphere. Meals are pre-ordered from an extensive menu and can even be delivered directly to your cottage if you’d rather enjoy a completely private evening surrounded by nature.
One of our funniest memories came after dinner on our first evening. With no lighting anywhere in the forest, we suddenly realised we couldn’t quite remember which winding woodland path led back to our cottage!
Needless to say, we eventually found our way, but we’d definitely recommend bringing a torch for evening walks.
Good to Know Before You Visit
As the paths throughout the village are natural forest trails, comfortable walking shoes or trainers are a good idea.
Dog lovers will also be pleased to know that pets are welcome for a small additional charge.
