Tryavna – Bulgaria’s Charming Town of Arts & Crafts
If you’re looking for a town that perfectly captures the spirit of Bulgaria’s National Revival, Tryavna is somewhere you shouldn’t miss.
Nestled in the foothills of the Balkan Mountains, this wonderfully preserved historic town is famous for its traditional architecture, colourful craft workshops and centuries-old artistic traditions. It’s the sort of place where it’s easy to lose track of time, wandering cobbled streets, browsing independent shops and admiring beautifully restored houses.
Whether you’re interested in history, photography or simply discovering authentic Bulgaria, Tryavna is one of those places that leaves a lasting impression.
A Town Built on Creativity
For centuries, Tryavna has been known as one of Bulgaria’s most important centres for woodcarving, icon painting and traditional craftsmanship.
During the Bulgarian National Revival, the famous Tryavna Art School flourished here, producing talented woodcarvers, icon painters and builders whose work can still be admired throughout the town today. Their legacy remains very much alive, making Tryavna feel less like an open-air museum and more like a town where tradition continues to thrive.
Walk around the Old Town
One of the best things to do in Tryavna is simply wander.
The old town is full of beautifully preserved National Revival houses, charming stone bridges and peaceful little streets where every corner seems to reveal another craft workshop or gallery.
We spent hours browsing the small independent shops, discovering everything from handmade leather bags and belts to traditional wood carvings, pottery and locally made souvenirs. If you’re looking for an authentic Bulgarian gift to take home, this is one of the best places we’ve found.
The Clock Tower
Standing proudly in the centre of the old square is Tryavna’s famous Clock Tower, built in 1814 and now one of the town’s best-known landmarks. It’s become a symbol of Tryavna and the perfect meeting point before exploring the surrounding streets. Tryavna Clock Tower
Nearby you’ll also find several fascinating museums, including the Daskalov House and the Museum of Woodcarving and Ethnographic Arts, where you can admire the intricate craftsmanship that made Tryavna famous throughout Bulgaria. Daskalov House Museum Museum of Woodcarving and Ethnographic Arts
Stop and Enjoy the Atmosphere
After a morning exploring, we finished our visit with a leisurely lunch overlooking the main square.
It’s one of those towns where there never seems to be any rush. Sitting outside with a drink, watching everyday life was one of our favourite parts of the day (along with the shopping!).
