July Morning in Bulgaria – A Tradition Worth Waking Up Early For

Every year on 1st July, thousands of people across Bulgaria gather on beaches, clifftops and hilltops to watch the first sunrise of the month. Known simply as July Morning, it’s one of Bulgaria’s most unique and much-loved traditions.

Unlike many celebrations, there are no official ceremonies or fireworks. Instead, people come together with friends, music and a flask of coffee (or something a little stronger!) to welcome the sunrise and celebrate the beginning of summer.

Why is it called July Morning?

The tradition takes its name from the song “July Morning” by the British rock band Uriah Heep, released in 1971.

During the communist era in Bulgaria, the song became a symbol of freedom, individuality and hope. Young people began gathering to watch the sunrise on 1st July while listening to the song, and over the years the tradition grew into something uniquely Bulgarian.

Today, people of all ages take part. For some, it’s about celebrating summer. For others, it’s a moment of reflection or simply an excuse to spend a memorable night with friends beside the sea.

Where is the best place to experience July Morning?

Although you’ll find celebrations all along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, a few places have become particularly well known.

Kamen Bryag

Perhaps the most famous location of all, Kamen Bryag is a dramatic stretch of cliffs on the northern Black Sea coast where people gather overnight to watch the sun rise directly from the sea. Live music often continues throughout the night, making it one of the most atmospheric places to experience the tradition.

Varna

Bulgaria’s seaside capital hosts several July Morning gatherings along its beaches, attracting locals and visitors alike.

Burgas

The beaches around Burgas are another popular place to welcome the sunrise, with groups of friends gathering from the early hours of the morning.

Smaller coastal towns

One of the nicest things about July Morning is that you don’t have to be at one of the major celebrations. Many people simply head to their favourite beach, spread out a blanket and enjoy the peaceful start to the day.

A tradition unlike any other

What makes July Morning so special is its simplicity.

There are no tickets to buy, no organised programme and no expectations. It’s simply about taking a moment to appreciate the sunrise, the sea and the company of those around you.

Whether you’re joining hundreds of people on the cliffs at Kamen Bryag or watching the sun quietly rise from a small beach further south, it’s an experience that perfectly captures the relaxed spirit of a Bulgarian summer.
