Dryanovo Monastery & Bacho Kiro Cave – One of Bulgaria’s Perfect Day Trips
Hidden within a spectacular limestone gorge just outside the town of Dryanovo, this beautiful corner of central Bulgaria combines history, nature, walking trails and one of Bulgaria’s most famous caves.
A Monastery Surrounded by Nature
The first thing that strikes you about Dryanovo Monastery is its setting.
Surrounded by dramatic cliffs, woodland and the peaceful Dryanovska River, it feels secluded despite being easily accessible by car.
Founded in the late 12th century, the monastery has been destroyed and rebuilt several times throughout its long history. It played an important role during the April Uprising of 1876 and remains an active monastery today, welcoming both pilgrims and visitors.
Bacho Kiro Cave
Just a short 300-metre walk from the monastery lies Bacho Kiro Cave, one of Bulgaria’s oldest and best-known caves.
Formed over millions of years, the cave stretches for around 3.6 kilometres, although visitors explore a guided section featuring impressive stalactites, stalagmites and beautifully illuminated chambers.
One thing I still remember from our visit was just how much cooler it was inside. We visited on a hot summer’s day and stepping into the cave felt like opening the door to a giant natural refrigerator! Even in the middle of summer it’s worth taking a light jacket, as the temperature inside is surprisingly low.
The paths can also be a little damp in places, so practical shoes with a good grip are definitely recommended.
One of the reasons we enjoyed this visit so much is that there’s plenty more to do if you have time.
Several walking trails begin near the monastery, following the river through the gorge and climbing towards viewpoints and the remains of medieval fortifications. If you enjoy hiking, you could easily spend half a day exploring the surrounding countryside.
For families, there’s also an adventure rope park nearby, while the riverside setting makes it a lovely place simply to relax.
Stop for Lunch
After exploring the cave, we crossed the bridge and enjoyed lunch at the traditional restaurant beside the river. The restaurant serves traditional Bulgarian dishes and is perfect for a lunch stop.
Dryanovo Monastery and Bacho Kiro Cave offer one of the most enjoyable combinations of history, nature and adventure we’ve found in Bulgaria. Whether you’re interested in monasteries, caves or simply spending a relaxing day outdoors, it’s somewhere we really recommend.
