The Free Sofia Tour: The Best Introduction to Sofia

Whenever someone visits me in Sofia, one of the first things I recommend is the Free Sofia Tour. I’ve done it several times myself, and it remains one of the best ways to get acquainted with the city.

These days, I don’t usually accompany my visitors. I send them off to enjoy the tour on their own and arrange to meet them afterwards at Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, where the tour finishes. It gives them a chance to discover Sofia independently and saves me from hearing the same stories yet again!

What to Expect

The Free Sofia Tour is a two-hour walking tour through the historical centre of Sofia. It takes in many of the city’s best-known sights while introducing you to its long and surprisingly complex history.

Sofia is one of Europe’s oldest cities, with Roman ruins, Ottoman-era buildings, communist architecture and modern city life all sitting alongside one another. You can walk past many of these places without appreciating what you’re looking at, which is why having a local guide makes such a difference.

The guides are knowledgeable and enthusiastic, but the tour never feels like a dry history lesson. Along the way, they share stories, local insights and some of the quirks that make Sofia such an interesting city.

It is also a great way to get your bearings at the beginning of a visit. By the time the tour finishes, you’ll have seen a good portion of central Sofia and will probably have a much better idea of where you would like to return and explore more thoroughly.

Is It Really Free?

There is no set ticket price. At the end of the tour, you can leave a donation based on what you thought the experience was worth and what you can afford. The tours receive no other funding, so donations are what allow them to continue operating.

I would always recommend taking some cash and giving your guide a reasonable amount. They are professional, licensed guides, and in my experience, they earn it.

Where and When Does It Start?

The tour meets outside the Palace of Justice, at the top of Vitosha Boulevard. Look for the guides and the Free Sofia Tour sign.

Tours run every day throughout the year and last approximately two hours. Booking is not compulsory, although you can reserve a place online if you prefer. The departure times change seasonally, so it is worth checking the official schedule before setting out.

The regular sightseeing tour is available in both English and Spanish, although the schedules differ.

A Few Practical Tips

Wear comfortable shoes, as you’ll be walking and standing for around two hours. Sofia’s pavements and yellow cobblestones can be uneven and particularly slippery when wet.

Bring water during the warmer months and dress properly in winter. The tours operate throughout the year and generally go ahead regardless of the weather.

Most importantly, try to do the tour near the beginning of your stay. It gives you an excellent overview of Sofia and makes exploring the city afterwards much easier.

Our Verdict

The Free Sofia Tour is interesting, entertaining and genuinely one of the best introductions to Bulgaria’s capital. I’ve taken the tour several times, and I continue to recommend it to almost everyone who comes to visit.

Or, more accurately, I send them to the Palace of Justice and tell them I’ll meet them at Alexander Nevsky Cathedral two hours later!
