Just before leaving Plovdiv and heading back to Sofia we decided we should really take Mr. Milchev’s advice and visit the 19th Century Restaurant. And good job we did!
XIXth Century is one of those places that you definitely MUST visit if you want to understand what Bulgarians mean when they say “home”. Locked back in time, the entire atmosphere has refused to move into modern days and carefully protects local traditions. Absolutely everything inside looks ancient, but it is yet very clean and nice.
I was honestly very tempted to start ordering rakia and hush away the disease that was torturing me the past couple of days. Nothing else, but the car keys in my pocket and the notion of the upcoming hour drive to Sofia prevented me from doing this. The Shepherd’s Salad I was having though was begging for it…
Take my advice: if you go to Plovdiv, make sure you stop by the XIXth Century restaurant! I doubt there is any other place that could let you dive into the Bulgarian spirit as much as this one. And if you’re up for experiencing the local culture I am sure you’ll love it!
