Being such a big fan of Indian food I was delighted to hear that there’s another great Indian restaurant in Sofia that I hadn’t yet tried!

I’d heard a lot of good things about Taj Mahal so it had some high expectations to live up to and I’m happy to say it exceeded all of them!

If you love Indian food you know that getting the right balance between spices and flavour are so important. Often you go to an Indian restaurant and find that the food has so many spices that you can no longer taste anything else! Taj Mahal have got that perfect balance. We ordered Onion Bhajis, Chana Masala (Chick Peas), and Saag Gosht (Lamb with Spinach). They were all delicious, and the lamb was the kind that just melted in your mouth. The mains were both full of flavour and just spicy enough. The rice and naan breads are also amazing, the garlic naan is so good you wont be able to stop eating it! It’s thin and crispy and really tasty.

Aside from the wonderful food, which is obviously the most important thing, the decor here is beautiful too. There are three floors which each seat around 30 people. This makes the atmosphere very cosy and relaxed. The top floor would actually make a perfect venue for a party of about 30 people. It’s spacious but intimate at the same time, with tables and sofas in every corner, meaning you can have all your friends in one place without being crowded onto a long table. There’s also a small balcony which means any smokers in the group can stay close to the party when they want to have a cigarette outside.

It’s not one of the cheapest restaurants in Sofia but the quality is reflected in the price. You can expect to spend about 30 leva each if you have a starter and a main course. The waitress also told us that all the ingredients they cook with are fresh and I would definitely prefer to pay a little extra for quality.

Taj Mahal is a very popular restaurant in Sofia so be sure to make a reservation in advance. Location is also perfect, you can park on the street outside and you can see Alexander Nevsky Cathedral at the end of the road. This is great if you’re bringing guests who are new to Sofia as after dinner you can just walk a few steps and show them this beautiful landmark!

Don’t worry if you’re not very organised and you can’t manage to get a table, Taj Mahal also offer takeaway and delivery throughout Sofia and you can order online! You also receive 20% off for takeaway orders!

What we love about it:

  • Melt in your mouth lamb
  • Delicious crispy naan bread
  • Beautiful decor and relaxing atmosphere
  • Friendly staff who all speak great English

What they can improve:

I have no complaints at all, everything was perfect.
