What’s the first thing that tourists think about when they imagine Sofia? Most probably – Alexander Nevsky Cathedral with its beautiful golden domes, right?

Before I moved to Sofia I was quite excited to see this place, and when I did, I really liked it, but after some month living in Sofia it just became one of the many touristic places in the city that I’ve stopped visiting or noticing. That’s why I was really not impressed with the idea of having lunch in Mamma Mia Restaurant, located just across the street from Alexander Nevsky. However, the restaurant turned out to be quite cozy and nice inside, and had a beautiful summer terrace outside, peaceful and surrounded by trees. I can’t say that I go there everyday, but if you want to eat some good food without necessarily having to dress up – you’ll like this place!

There are 5 Mamma Mia Restaurants in Sofia, but this is the review of the one on Shipka street!

What we love about it:

  • Location, and obviously the view (from the terrace)
  • Good food and my absolute favorite “Mandrajiiska Gozba” (fried Sirene and Kashkaval cheese with tomatoes, onion and hot pepper). Update: the last time I went there they’ve changed their menu a little bit, and this dish wasn’t there anymore, but I’m still wondering whether it would be possible to ask for it anyway – since it’s so easy to cook. If you do it – let us know how it goes!!!
  • Very friendly and helpful staff (everybody speaks English)
  • Prices, which are more than correct for Sofia
  • Their unusual “Domashna Limonada” (home made lemonade) with lemon sorbet
  • They also serve breakfasts, and it’s a lovely way to start your Saturday or Sunday morning and later have a walk in the city centre

What they can improve:

  • Well, the fact that they don’t have “Mandrajiiska Gozba” on the menu anymore!
