Hiking, Running or Football perhaps?
With good weather from April – October why not consider taking your training outside. There are so many places where you can enjoy outdoor activities in Bulgaria such as running, hiking or football. Here’s a few ideas for outdoor sports in Sofia:
Rakovski Stadium
If you enjoy running on a track you can check out the Rakovski stadium. It looks derelict at a first glance, weeds have taken over where the seats used to be and the whole place is in need of some care and attention however go there on a sunny Saturday and the place is packed with people working out. There’s a 400 metre track, a football pitch and some bars / tyres for strength training! The best thing is, it’s FREE! My favourite time is 6am when you often have the whole place to yourself. Put in your headphones and play “Eye of the Tiger”. It’s perfect!
Football in Sofia
If you’re looking for a football team to join in Sofia then check out Sofia Nomads FC. They play 6 a side three times per week, Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Don’t worry about your age or fitness level either, they just love to play football and will welcome you to their team!
Hiking on Mount Vitosha
If you love walking and would like to take advantage of the beautiful surroundings in Sofia, then you should really spend a day hiking on Mount Vitosha. You can choose to walk the entire way to the peak (about 8 hours depending on your fitness level) or you can take chair lifts part of the way for around 10 leva (5 Euros). From the last chair lift the climb to the peak is between 1-2 hours but the views when you reach are incredible and you can stop in at the weather station for some soup to fuel you for the return journey.
5km Run South Park
Every Saturday at 10am head to South Park to take part in a 5km run. Usually more than 300 runners attend and although it’s not a race, you will be timed and given a place when you finish. If you need some motivation and are looking for a nice place to run outdoors this will be perfect. It’s also free to take part! Find out more on their website.
