10 Reasons why you must visit Bulgaria!
I often get asked why I like it here, so I’ve put together my top 10 reasons why I think you must visit Bulgaria!
Reason 1.
Bulgaria is beautiful and cheap!
Yes, that’s right, it’s one of the few countries left in Europe that is still a little bit of a secret! The country is beautiful and not yet spoiled by thousands of tourists and because it isn’t very popular yet and it still uses it’s own currency, the Lev, it’s very cheap! The food, accommodation, drinks, and even properties if you’re interested. Get over here now and snap up a bargain!
Reason 2.
The place has so much history!
For those of you who don’t know, Bulgaria has a very rich history and Bulgarians are very proud of it. You can visit some wonderful historical sites, such as the famous Rila Monastery or the amazing Roman Theatre in Plovdiv which dates back to 98-117 AD. Another is the museum town of Koprivshtitsa where you will be transported back in time. As you walk along the cobbled streets it’s hard to believe you are in the modern day world. Everything about this place is incredible, the buildings, the people, the food, it’s truly magical. I recommend spending one or two nights in Koprivshtitsa in one of the lovely traditional hotels, you won’t be disappointed.
Ask any Bulgarian about their country and they will tell you stories of their brave ancestors who struggled to keep Bulgarian culture alive during the ruling of the Ottoman Empire. It’s quite inspirational to see everyone so very proud of their heritage.
Reason 3.
The beaches.
I wasn’t expecting Bulgaria to have such lovely sea side resorts but it really does have beautiful beaches! Visit in the summer and temperatures are likely to be 30 degrees Celsius and above!
Some of the beaches are busy with tourists, such as Sunny Beach, which is famous for drinking and partying! Others are busy with Bulgarians escaping the heat of the cities but there are also some very pretty and much quieter towns where you can enjoy a more romantic and peaceful break, these include Sozopol and Lozenets.
Sozopol is absolutely beautiful, there is something very special about the old town here. After spending a day on the beach you can go for dinner in the old town and then take a walk around the streets and enjoy all of the local traditions. It really is one of my favourite holiday destinations. Start packing your beach clothes!
Reason 4.
The Capital City.
Sofia is a city that has an incredible vibe. It’s full of energy and the nightlife reflects this with so many trendy bars and clubs.
There are also lots of restaurants and plenty of places to relax and watch the world go by too. You must visit the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, a truly breathtaking symbol for Sofia.
To get the most from your visit, take advantage of the Free Sofia Tour. It’s a perfect way to see the city on foot and maybe make some new friends too!
Reason 5.
The food.
You will be delighted by the local food and the local wine for that matter! There are many different soups including the cold cucumber soup, Tarator, tasty salads served with every meal and lots of grilled meats and stews. You will also find some lovely fresh fish served at the beaches. Be prepared though, with your Shopska salad you will probably be sipping Rakia, a very strong national drink that is usually between 40% to 60% in strength! Reason 6.
The people are beautiful!
You may have heard rumours that Bulgarian girls are stunning and it is completely true! However, the men are hot too so don’t worry ladies! There is a big emphasis on looking good in Bulgaria, keeping fit, dressing well and showing it off!
The best thing is that this is contagious, as soon as you arrive in Bulgaria you will want to get dressed up and join in the fun! And don’t be put off by the glamour, the people in Bulgaria are really friendly! If you want to truly impress them, why not try learning Bulgarian! Seven Rila Lakes.
The Seven Rila Lakes are a group of lakes situated in the northwestern Rila Mountains in Bulgaria.
For some truly amazing holiday photos this is the place to go! Trust me, it’s beautiful. You can also visit the incredible Rila Monastery while you are in the region.
Reason 8.
Bansko, Borovets & Pamporovo.
Ski or Snowboard in Bansko, Borovets or Pamporovo. If you don’t feel like a beach holiday to Bulgaria then take advantage of the cheap prices and head out for a ski trip! Imagine spending Christmas and New Year in a chalet with a log fire and hot tub by the ski slopes! If you’re a beginner you can also learn to ski in Bulgaria, the value for money is great and there are some great teachers here who all speak English.
Reason 9.
The Mountains, The Parks and The Nature.
Hiking, climbing, horse riding, fishing, rafting … these are just some of the many outdoor activities you can enjoy here. There’s so much to do in Bulgaria if you like fresh air and exercise. The scenery is incredible and the choices of activities are endless. I still have a huge list of things I want to try here! Whether it’s a bungee jump or a walk in the mountain that floats your boat, you’re going to enjoy Bulgaria.
Reason 10.
Visit Bulgaria because you will be much cooler than your friends who don’t even know where Bulgaria is!
It’s very true that there are many people who couldn’t tell you where Bulgaria is on a world map. I used to be one of them! It’s quite a small country, it’s only recently joined the EU and it’s not the most popular tourist destination, yet! However, wouldn’t you like to be the first of your friends to go? There’s nothing better than going on vacation somewhere a little more unusual than everyone else is there! Bulgaria is that place!
Wish you were here!
